How can I help you through therapy?
I will work with you to identify your personal goals for counseling and then tailor counseling to you and your goals. You can expect that I will listen closely to understand your experience and then find ways to assist you in moving towards your goals. Therapy is a personalized experience, so how it helps differs from person to person. I will help you develop a different perspective on your experiences, explore and discover things about yourself, make changes in your unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaving, process difficult experiences, and learn healthy coping skills.
What is the process of counseling?
Once you have scheduled an intake evaluation, you will be asked to arrive about 30 minutes before the intake to complete forms. I will review this information before the appointment to ensure that we have an accurate, initial first impression regarding your needs
This first meeting will also allow you to determine if I will be a good fit for you. The intake evaluation will take approximately 60 to 120 minutes and you be asked to explain your concerns and report previous information regarding your treatment with me. At the end of the appointment, I will discuss the next steps in regard to recommending services that may be a good fit for you or will refer you to a more appropriate service (level of care).
What if I am in crisis?
I am consider an on-duty counselor. I am available to answer your calls within 24-hours from the time you contact me, or I can briefly meet with if you are in crisis (i.e. experiencing suicidality, having difficulties functioning, etc.).
Will anybody find out that I am in therapy?
Thrapy is confidential, which means that I cannot release any information about you except under certain legal conditions. If you have concerns or questions about confidentiality, please discuss them with me during intake.
Is therapy the same as talking to my friends?
Talking with friends is a great way to get support, but it’s not the same as participating in therapy. I am a professional with specialized training in helping people who are encountering difficulties in their lives. I can also provide an “outside”, objective perspective that is different than what your friends can provide. Our therapeutic relationship will be based on non-judgment or discrimination, period. My job it is to help you and making you feel more comfortable being open about your problems, which will make it easier to get effective help.

Can I see a female therapist?
Yes. At WMH we want you to find the best match possible and sometimes this means trying a counselor different from the person who saw you at intake. Please let us know if you prefer to work with a female or if you have a specific treatment modality you would like your counselor to use.
How long will I have to be in counseling?
Many problems can be dealt with in a brief period of time, but this is not always the case. There is no magic number or formula to determine how long it may take. During your initial intake assessment, we will have a conversation around making a determination if your needs are best addressed by receiving outpatient individual counseling or if a higher level of care is necessary. We will speak regularly about your progress. Eventually, we may determine that you have met your therapy goals. At this point, we may discuss your need for continued therapy. You may also bring up this topic at any time during your sessions.

What are some myths about counseling?
Asking for help is a sign of weakness.
Contrary to this belief, it takes a great deal of emotional strength to seek help for problems that may be too overwhelming to manage alone.
A therapist will fix my problems right away.
The goal of counseling is not for someone else to “fix” your problems. I will help you identify those concerns and set goals for yourself. Solving those problems may involve working on exploring your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. In doing so, we can explore your options and make a decision for how to best achieve your goals. Just remember, you are the best one to fix your problems!
A therapist can’t understand what I am going through, because they’re not going through it themselves.
Although it is obvious that each individual is unique and that achieving a complete understanding of one’s situation is very difficult, I have been trained to learn about, be sensitive to, and respectful of the unique experiences of each client. Those experiences may include concerns related to gender, age, cultural background, racial/ethnic differences, sexual orientation, gender identity, family-of-origin, or socioeconomic issues.
What is couples counseling?
Couples counseling is an opportunity to work with your partner on issues that may be impacting your relationship. You may focus on communication skills, conflict resolution, or making decisions about your future together. I will serve as a mediator and guide during these discussions, and will help you work together to focus on and achieve specific goals for your relationship.
What is group therapy?
Group counseling may be an alternative or supplement to individual counseling. It may be the best option for individuals who are coping with relationship or interpersonal concerns, but may also for those dealing with issues such as depression or anxiety. The opportunity to meet with other people can provide you with peer support as you learn ways to cope. If I recommend that you join a group, you will likely schedule a meeting with the staff member who leads the group for a “screening” appointment, during which time you will learn more about the group. It will also give the group leader a chance to learn more about your needs and how the group may be able to help you achieve your goals.
Along with groups, there are also workshops that focus on specific topics, such as anxiety or stress management. These workshops typically meet for a brief time period, and are more educational in nature than a therapy group.
